The Jitters
Nov 8
The Jitters $35 in advance, $42 at the door The Jitters ride again! The band that formed in Toronto in 1981 (and allegedly broke up ten years later) continues to occasionally get together and make music. Last seen performing live in 2019, Blair, Danny, Matt, and David are still the rocking pop band they’ve always been.
In the ’80s, the band opened for The Kinks, The Byrds, Huey Lewis and the News, Colin James and more. March 1988 saw them support Heart in the UK, closing off the tour with three sold-out nights at Wembley Arena, where The Jitters received standing ovations. “Last of the Red HotFools” not only became a Top Twenty single in Canada, it broke into the BBC’s Hot 100.
Always video favourites, with their indie single “Take Me As I Am,” their 1990 song “’Til the Fever Breaks” rose to #4 on the Much Music countdown. Nominated for a Juno in 1988, The Jitters won the Toronto Music Award for Best Rising Stars in 1990. At Hugh’s Room, as in past appearances, the band promises to break out the old songs as well as a few new surprises.
Playing Shylock
Nov 8
A production of The Merchant of Venice is cancelled mid-performance after public outcries about the play. The actor playing Shylock delivers a candid and passionate appeal about identity, public discourse, and the theatre.
Saul Rubinek, beloved Canadian television and film veteran (Wall Street, Unforgiven, Barney’s Version, The Family Man, Frasier) began his illustrious career in Ontario. He began performing at the Stratford Festival in 1969 and, in 1972, was a key artist in the very first season of the brand-new “Toronto Free Theatre” which would later become Canadian Stage. Saul returns to Berkeley Street with this quick-witted and poignant play about cultural fractures and a life on the stage.
