Lampedusa, a critically acclaimed political stage play from director Anders Lustgarten, is landing in Canada for the first time ever in a month-long run at the Pi Theatre. The delicate, heart-wrenching production explores themes of immigration, capitalism, and human connection through the stories of two strangers whose lives are deeply affected by migration: a fisherman from the Italian island of Lampedusa, whose generational labour has shifted to pulling migrants out of the Mediterranean; and a biracial woman in Leeds who sees families to apart by capitalism and immigrant bashing. The production has been lauded in its earlier international runs as a unique portrait of political struggle in the modern era, and as international tensions continue to rise, its message and perspective only become more topical. This highly anticipated national premiere starts previews on May 5.
