Sleaze Please

Check the papers — 2009 is back.

The era of hipster blogs, party photography and skinny jeans is one of the most controversial in recent fashion history, but trend forecasters everywhere are reporting that the messy, grungy ethos of the style now dubbed “indie sleaze” is coming back in a big way. Unlike the clean, minimalist styles of the past few years, the look is defined by chaos and excess — think cheap jewelry, clashing clothes, audacious hats and thick, smudged eyeliner that looks like you’ve just rolled out of bed or left an all-night rave. Achieve this look by mixing bold statement pieces and weird accessories with vintage details, like pearls or granny socks — and don’t forget to carry around an iPod and over-ear headphones for true off-the-grid vibes.
